Poder Latinx Hosts Part 1 of Free Citizenship Clinic in Osceola County

OSCEOLA COUNTY, FL - Poder Latinx is hosting a free, two-part citizenship clinic available to local community members in Florida. Part 1 of 2 is a required informational session for the citizenship clinic being held on February 25th.  During the informational session, applicants will be informed of the proper documentation necessary to apply for citizenship and how to prepare for the clinic. A pro-bono attorney will be present to answer any additional legal questions regarding the process ahead of the clinic. Part 2 of 2 where community members can apply for citizenship with assistance from attorneys at no cost and receive support in filling out forms and paperwork. This informational session will be recorded. In order to take part in the citizenship clinic, applicants must either attend the informational session in person or watch the recording that will be sent once registration for the event has been completed.

Poder Latinx Hosts Cafecito Informational Session: What is the Immigration Parole for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans?

ORLANDO - On January 5, the Biden administration announced an immigration initiative that would provide humanitarian parole to allow migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to have the authorization to come to the United States for up to two years and work. Migrants must have eligible sponsors already in the United States who can provide financial support, as well as secure their own airplane tickets and pass required background and health checks. The program also expels migrants from these countries that enter the United States illegally.

NATIONWIDE - This Sunday, Poder Latinx will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993. The FMLA was initially created as a compromise to create a program that protected jobs and health insurance while individuals took care of themselves during a personal illness, cared for a new child, or cared for a seriously ill family member. Over the past 30 years, there has been a growing need and support from both party lines for paid leave. FMLA currently provides only 56% of the workforce with access to unpaid leave, a “benefit” that most workers cannot afford.

Poder Latinx Hosts Coffee Talk with Immigration Lawyer to Discuss Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

KISSIMMEE - An estimated 1.7 million people live in households with at least one TPS holder or TPS-eligible individual. Temporary Protected Status has shown that protection from deportation and access to work authorization provides significant benefits for immigrant families, allowing them to improve their economic condition, keep their families together, and fully participate in their local communities.

One of Poder Latinx’s key issues is immigrant justice, including advocacy for TPS holders and a pathway to citizenship. Poder Latinx will be presenting a conversation with immigration lawyer, Ingrid Morfa, to discuss the state of TPS and answer questions from community members to learn more about eligibility requirements. Free food and refreshments will be provided.

As Georgia U.S. Senate Runoff Election Wraps Up, Latinx, Youth Voters Vote their Voice

NATIONWIDE - Latinx and youth voters were decisive voting blocs in the outcomes of the 2022 races across the country. This midterm election cycle had the second-highest youth voter turnout in the past three decades, and Latinx voters, the second-largest group of voting-age Americans, affirmed their power as a crucial voter demographic. Final voter turnout numbers will be officially reported in February or March when voter file records are updated. According to the 2022 Midterm Election Voter Poll, conducted by the African American Research Collaborative, inflation and gas prices, cost of health care, and abortion rights were top priorities for voters, with strong support for policies to address these issues.
