Migrants must have eligible sponsors already in the United States who can provide financial support, as well as secure their own airplane tickets and pass required background and health checks. The program also expels migrants from these countries that enter the United States illegally.

The FMLA was initially created as a compromise to create a program that protected jobs and health insurance while individuals took care of themselves during a personal illness, cared for a new child, or cared for a seriously ill family member. Over the past 30 years, there has been a growing need and support from both party lines for paid leave. FMLA currently provides only 56% of the workforce with access to unpaid leave, a “benefit” that most workers cannot afford.

One of Poder Latinx’s key issues is immigrant justice, including advocacy for TPS holders and a pathway to citizenship. Poder Latinx will be presenting a conversation with immigration lawyer, Ingrid Morfa, to discuss the state of TPS and answer questions from community members to learn more about eligibility requirements. Free food and refreshments will be provided.

Latinas who face the brunt of child care responsibilities are the lowest paid demographic in the country and are often pushed out of the workforce.
One of Poder Latinx’s key issues is working on economic justice, including a campaign for Paid Leave for All to secure a sustainable national paid leave program across the country. One of the first steps in this advocacy effort is making sure the community is educated on paid leave and its current state. Poder Latinx will host a community movie screening for the film “Zero Weeks,” highlighting America’s paid leave crisis.
Free entrance and popcorn will be provided; RSVP is required due to limited seating availability.
