WASHINGTON – Yesterday, the unelected Senate parliamentarian voted on the Build Back Better bill and chose to not accept the current version of the critical package, which includes long-overdue immigration provisions.
NATIONWIDE- On Wednesday, the United States Supreme Court held oral arguments on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, regarding a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks, only allowing them in instances of medical emergencies or severe fetal abnormalities. If the Mississippi law is upheld, this case has the potential to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has recognized abortion during the first two trimesters of pregnancy as a constitutional right since 1973. While a ruling is not expected to come until next year, it is anticipated that 6 Supreme Court Justices will rule in favor of upholding the Mississippi law and setting a new precedent that allows states to make decisions on the limits of this procedure.
ATLANTA - Poder Latinx applauds voting rights and social justice advocate Stacey Abrams’ bid for Georgia Governor. Abrams announced her bid yesterday, pledging to fight for economic justice and healthcare expansion. After her bid for the same office in 2018, Abrams founded the organization Fair Fight, which combats voter suppression and protects voting rights. She also founded Fair Count, which advocated for census participation. Abrams lost her bid for Governor in 2018 by just 50,000 votes amid a series of voter suppression tactics in communities of color.
