As Supreme Court Prepares to Uphold Mississippi Abortion Ban, Poder Latinx Looks toward Mobilization in 2022

NATIONWIDE- On Wednesday, the United States Supreme Court held oral arguments on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, regarding a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks, only allowing them in instances of medical emergencies or severe fetal abnormalities. If the Mississippi law is upheld, this case has the potential to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has recognized abortion during the first two trimesters of pregnancy as a constitutional right since 1973. While a ruling is not expected to come until next year, it is anticipated that 6 Supreme Court Justices will rule in favor of upholding the Mississippi law and setting a new precedent that allows states to make decisions on the limits of this procedure.

Poder Latinx has released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s arguments on Dobbs v. Jackson:

“The Supreme Court’s job is to interpret the Constitution, and upholding this law is an infringement of a woman’s constitutional right to have autonomy over her own body. It should be a bipartisan issue that the Supreme Court not carry out political acts such as upholding this Mississippi law. As a consequence, the Latinx community will be forced to bear the brunt of these restrictive policies, along with the young, immigrants, and those facing economic insecurity. We need to be proactive right now in preparation for the midterm elections, mobilizing our communities to lean into fighting for the reproductive rights of all women. Democrats and Republicans alike will be sure to turn this into one of their main campaign issues. This decision will likely come during the peak of midterm election campaigning, bringing reproductive rights to the forefront of many candidates' agendas. This case would have a lasting impact on the Latinx community as it intersects economic justice, discrimination, and lack of access to quality, affordable health care. The past two generations have been afforded the right to reproductive protections, and we need to ensure we do the work to keep these protections for future generations,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
