Poder Latinx Response to Sen. Manchin’s Comment on Build Back Better

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) stated that he would not support President Biden’s Build Back Better Act, despite previous promises that he would work to come to an agreement on the legislation. The bill comes at a time when many families in West Virginia and elsewhere are finding it hard to put food on their tables. The Build Back Better Act would help the American people in three ways: support for working families through the child tax credit, paid medical and family leave, and provisions to slow the catastrophic effects of climate change.

The following is a statement from Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director for Poder Latinx.

“There is no true and inclusive economic recovery without helping out working families. The Build Back Better Act would continue helping low-income families through the child tax credit, addressing the nation’s lack of paid medical and family leave, and the important provisions to stem the progression of climate change.

Currently, the U.S. is one of the few countries that does not offer national paid leave, although Americans widely support it. And poor Americans have less access to it. The Build Back Better Act provides a solution to the disproportionate coverage, specifically for lower-wage workers, women, and workers of color.

Furthermore, the climate crisis is an existential threat that demands urgent action. We see new weather disasters every day, from tornados to wildfires to droughts. It is no longer a case of whether it will happen, it is happening now. Without passing the Build Back Better Act, catastrophic consequences may be impossible to tackle at the necessary scale.

For all these reasons, voting against the Build Back Better Act is unacceptable. Sen. Manchin must reverse his position and keep in mind the future of families in West Virginia and all low-income Americans.

For our part, Poder Latinx will be organizing locally throughout the country. We will remind our community who voted against one of the most transformative legislation in recent history that would heavily benefit Latinx women, children, and working families. Americans deserve to know the senators who vote in favor of the American people and those who vote in favor of their personal interests.”
