Poder Latinx Statement on Senate Parliamentarian Response to Build Back Better
WASHINGTON – Yesterday, the unelected Senate parliamentarian voted on the Build Back Better bill and chose to not accept the current version of the critical package, which includes long-overdue immigration provisions.
“We are disappointed by the Senate parliamentarian’s decision to vote no on the immigration provisions in the Build Back Better Act, as we know further iterations of the bill are sure to impact vulnerable families across our country. The Build Back Better bill could finally provide work permits and long-term immigration permits for undocumented populations. While the previously passed infrastructure bill was a positive step to improving our nation, the social impact of the Build Back Better Act is an essential element of the comprehensive changes needed in the U.S. to create a more equitable and just society. We demand and expect that the Senate does what is the right thing to do - providing immigration relief, inserting permanent residency back into the bill, and fulfilling their promise of citizenship to millions of hard-working immigrant families,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
“We have an opportunity to transform communities across the country with the social infrastructure so necessary for protecting families and people in need, and must not let this momentary setback stop the push for an immigration overhaul. This decision is simply wrong, but lawmakers have the authority and ability to override the unelected Senate parliamentarian’s decision. Democrats have control of both legislative chambers of government and the White House, as well as a mandate from our communities to see this through, ” said Esteban Garces, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
