Poder Latinx Condemns the Laken Riley Act (S5) and Urges U. S. Senators to Protect Working Immigrant Communities

Washington, D.C. - As the Senate deliberates the alarming Laken Riley Act (S5) today, Poder Latinx firmly opposes this bill, which seeks to criminalize and exploit immigrant working communities under the new administration's stringent policies.  Echoing the harmful legacy of Arizona’s SB 1070, S5 represents a significant threat to immigrant rights and justice.

Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx, underscores the importance of standing against this bill:

"Our working immigrant families deserve safety, dignity, and the opportunity to contribute without fear. S5, intending to hold accountable those who act criminally and against the law, can not be used to generalize on the hard-working immigrant individuals who contribute to this country and undermine our values. We urge all Senators, especially those representing communities with significant immigrant populations to oppose this legislation. They must ensure that this bill does not become a tool for persecution and extremism, and prevent another era of fear-mongering reminiscent of SB 1070. The impact on our families and communities would be devastating.

The proposed legislation, coupled with the administration's announcement of pursuing mass deportations, amplifies the urgency for action. Poder Latinx calls on the Senate to reject S5, advocating for policies that uphold justice and equity. We encourage community members to engage with their Senators, express their concerns, and support legislative measures that protect and empower immigrant communities.”
