Poder Latinx Condemns Divisive and Offensive Remarks Targeting Puerto Ricans and Communities of Color

Washington, DC — In response to the recent, offensive comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally, which he attempted to downplay as “jokes” against Puerto Ricans and other communities of color, Poder Latinx unequivocally condemns any rhetoric that seeks to degrade or target Latino communities. Such remarks are not only unacceptable but dangerously amplify hate speech at a time when the Latino electorate is poised to play a critical role in the upcoming election.

Latino communities across the country have tirelessly contributed to the nation’s social, cultural, and economic fabric, and deserve nothing less than respect and inclusion. Poder Latinx is calling for a strong rebuke of this rhetoric from leaders at every level. Words that foster division have no place in today’s America, and as the nation moves closer to a pivotal election, it is crucial to recognize the impact that hate-fueled narratives can have on shaping our country’s future.

The following statement is attributable to Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:

"We refuse to stand silently as divisive rhetoric seeks to tear us apart. Puerto Ricans and the Latino community at large deserve respect and the right to live without fear. There is no place for hate in America—yet this is the tone the aspiring Republican presidential candidate sets for his followers? We call on leaders at every level to urgently and firmly denounce these actions. Latino voices are woven into the fabric of this nation, and together, we will continue to rise against hate, mobilize our communities, and build a future grounded in justice and equality."

Mynellies Negrón, Communications Director at Poder Latinx and a proud Puerto Rican, also voiced her concerns:

“There is nothing humorous about Mr. Hinchcliffe’s comments. Trying to justify such blatant disrespect as ‘entertainment’ at a political rally is entirely wrong. At a time when we should be fostering unity, rhetoric like this only serves to fuel hate and intolerance. The only silver lining is that it reveals what kind of America we might expect under the candidate he represented—and why it’s essential for Latinos to recognize the power of our vote.”

As a nonpartisan nonprofit organization, Poder Latinx reaffirms its commitment to mobilizing Latino communities and allies to reject hate in all its forms. We urge lawmakers, partners, and advocates to champion policies that protect immigrant and Latino families from discrimination, foster a culture of inclusion, and strengthen protections against harmful rhetoric and actions.
