Poder Latinx Condemns New Florida’s Anti-Immigrant Laws
Washington, DC — With Governor Ron DeSantis signing a sweeping package of anti-immigrant laws in Florida, —aimed at increasing penalties for undocumented immigrants, enabling mass deportations, and aligning with the federal anti-immigrant agenda—Poder Latinx expresses deep concern for the safety and well-being of immigrant communities. The organization strongly denounces this cruel, politically motivated agenda, which wastes taxpayer dollars, fuels division and fear, and undermines the very communities that contribute to Florida’s economy and culture.
The following statement can be attributed to Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:
"This is a troubling time for Florida, where hundreds of thousands of immigrants, including those from mixed-status families, now face heightened risks due to the reckless and inhumane policies imposed by elected officials. Driven by the escalating anti-immigrant agenda spread across the country, these measures endanger communities and threaten the values of dignity and safety. Instead of uplifting communities, some elected officials are choosing to scapegoat immigrants—individuals who come to this country in pursuit of the American Dream and who are vital to Florida’s economy and society.
“Our nation thrives because of its immigrant communities, whose contributions drive local economies, small businesses, and major industries. Families protected under DACA, TPS, and asylum seekers are integral to the state’s workforce and entrepreneurship, strengthening cities and fueling economic growth. However, the harmful policies imposed by Florida officials go beyond targeting undocumented migrants—they also endanger those with lawful status. Across the country, we are witnessing a rise in racial profiling, even against U.S. citizens, proving that these attacks are not just about immigration status but about discrimination and exclusion at large. Treating immigrants as political pawns instead of human beings is not just immoral—it is un-American."
"Elected officials have a responsibility to support policies that foster opportunity, inclusion, and pathways to naturalization, not ones that promote racial profiling and persecution based on language, skin color, or country of origin. Poder Latinx denounces these unjust laws and stands in support of immigrants so they can live with dignity, safety, and prosperity."
Poder Latinx has deep ties to Florida, where we began our work in 2019 and continue empowering Latino communities to be active participants in democracy. Through civic engagement, voter education, and advocacy for immigration, economic, and environmental justice, we remain committed to building a more just and inclusive future for all.
