Poder Latinx Asks Congress for Climate Investments Following SCOTUS Decision on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency

The decision narrows the EPA’s authority and scales back movement work on improving environmental conditions

NATIONWIDE - The United States Supreme Court has released its decision on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency, one of the most significant environmental cases presented to SCOTUS. Under a provision of the Clean Air Act, Congress constitutionally authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to issue significant rules  - among those the nation’s electric grids and decarbonization - without limits on requirements. With the Court’s decision in WV v. EPA, the scope of the EPA’s authority has been sharply curtailed.

Poder Latinx has released the following statement on WV v. EPA:

“The Biden Administration put forth a bold climate action initiative agenda, with the goal of cutting the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. The decision by the Supreme Court to curtail the EPA’s authority in the middle of a climate crisis is disappointing and overreaching - setting another barrier for the government to mitigate climate change. This decision has allowed the majority of our Supreme Court justices to put the interests of big corporations above the needs of the people and the planet. By rolling back the EPA’s authority, we are directly hurting our communities and digging a deeper hole in the climate crisis. We can’t wait to act on climate when communities of color are being impacted every day by extreme weather- wildfires, extreme heat, and hurricanes are hurting our communities due to the climate crisis. Now, we need Congress to finally pass climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy investments because for every second we delay, the costs of inaction for all Americans only grows,” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.
