SCOTUS Reaches Decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Effectively Restricting Reproductive Rights

Dobbs v. Jackson overturned the decision in Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established the federal right to an abortion

NATIONWIDE - In a 6-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade - the case that has protected reproductive rights at the federal level since 1973. In 2022 alone, more than 500 anti-abortion measures have been introduced in 41 states. Now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned, reproductive health laws will be up to the discretion of state legislatures, in which at least 26 states are likely to move to ban abortion, and 36 million women and other people who become pregnant could lose the right to choose.

Poder Latinx has released the following statement on the SCOTUS decision on Dobbs v. Jackson:

“We knew this decision was coming and yet it doesn’t hurt any less. It is a shame that reproductive and health care rights have been a fallout of our highly divided political climate. Elected officials are attacking protections that affect lower-income communities of color, especially those in rural areas. They are burdening people into carrying unwanted pregnancies, including those that families may not have the capacity to care for. Politicians have created barriers to reproductive and health care services, child care assistance, paid leave programs, and many other programs necessary to aid in a child's upbringing. How can we force people to have children when we refuse even to give them the adequate resources to properly and healthily sustain a new life? Our political system has let down so many marginalized communities - we can’t let this keep happening. Women’s lives are at risk without access to legal reproductive health measures. We need to elect candidates that reflect the needs of our communities to advocate for policies that will protect our rights. There’s still time to turn this around as long as our communities show up to vote and call on Congress to codify the right to reproductive health justice,” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.
