“Tierra Mía” Returns with Second Arizona Episode Highlighting the Toll of Extreme Heat and Federal Clean Energy Cuts on Latino Communities
The Latino-focused Tierra Mía video series explores how Latino communities are confronting climate change, extreme heat, and rising energy costs, while continuing to fight for clean energy solutions.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, El Tiempo Latino, Climate Power En Acción and Poder Latinx released the latest episode of the Tierra Mía docuseries, focusing on Latino communities in Arizona living at the intersection of extreme heat, rising electricity bills, and rollbacks to clean energy investments.
Tierra Mía is a joint storytelling initiative that highlights how Latinos across the country are leading climate solutions while bearing the brunt of climate impacts and political attacks on clean energy. This newest episode centers on Arizona, a state experiencing record-breaking heat, at a moment when families and small businesses were beginning to benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, before key clean energy programs were stalled or cut under President Trump.
The episode features programs like Solar For All, designed to help low-income families, rural communities, and tribes access solar energy, programs that could have lowered electricity bills and improved health outcomes during extreme heat. Instead, recent federal decisions have frozen these opportunities, leaving communities with fewer tools to adapt as temperatures rise and costs climb.
Through personal stories, from a family farm forced to pause its solar plans after losing federal support, to Latino workers and families choosing between paying electricity bills, buying groceries, or affording medication, the episode shows how decisions made in Washington are felt most acutely where the heat hits hardest. It also lifts up grassroots
organizations and community leaders who continue organizing, educating, and demanding energy justice despite growing uncertainty.
“This episode makes clear that attacks on clean energy aren’t abstract policy debates, they have immediate, real-life consequences for Latino families,” said Antonieta Cádiz Executive Director of Climate Power En Acción. “In Arizona, extreme heat is already a public health crisis. Rolling back programs like Solar for All means higher energy bills, fewer protections, and more families left vulnerable when temperatures soar. Within just
one year, much of the progress made under the Inflation Reduction Act has been reversed, and Latino communities are paying the price. Tierra Mía tells the stories behind the data and makes clear what’s at stake for our communities nationwide.”
The episode underscores a central truth: while climate impacts intensify and clean energy progress is slowed, Latino communities continue to organize under the same sun, building solutions, protecting their health, and refusing to be left behind.
“At Tiempo Company, we believe powerful storytelling starts with listening to communities and earning their trust,” said Rafael Ulloa, Deputy Publisher of Tiempo Company. “Through Tierra Mía, our partnership with Climate Power En Acción allows us to elevate real stories from the ground up—stories that help families see themselves, understand what’s happening around them, and feel less alone in the challenges they face. This series reflects our shared commitment to producing journalism that informs, connects, and continues to serve Latino communities across the country.”
“Arizona families are caught between record heat and rising energy bills, while clean energy solutions are being stalled. This episode shows how Latino communities are organizing, speaking out, and demanding an energy system that protects both our health and our wallets. Poder Latinx is proud to support and lead the way on civic power to claim energy and environmental justice for all Arizonians.” said Adonías Arévalo, Chief of Staff, Poder Latinx.
This episode of the Tierra Mía series launched by Climate Power En Acción and El Tiempo Latino in 2024, shifting its focus from the benefits of historic climate investments enabled by the Inflation Reduction Act to the threats posed by climate rollbacks and disinformation. The series spotlights how cuts to clean energy funding and weakened protections directly harm Latino communities.
Each episode of the video series will be available on Tiempo Latino’s YouTube channel. Tierra Mía also highlights opportunities and resources available to Latinos in the fight against climate change. To learn more and watch the episodes, tierra mia.tiempocompany.com.
