Poder Latinx Applauds the Passage of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act
Although a Step in the Right Direction, Poder Latinx Will Continue to Fight for More Representation Among the Most Vulnerable Communities
WASHINGTON - Poder Latinx would like to commend the Senate for its work in accomplishing the swift passage of bipartisan legislation aimed to bring much-needed relief to families across the country that have already begun, and will undoubtedly continue, to face the devastating ripple effects of COVID-19.
This package of legislation - offering 10 paid sick days and 12 weeks paid leave for those affected by the economic strain of this crisis - is a good first step in offering immediate relief to families in need, however, Poder Latinx believes more can be done to ensure the safety and health of all - while also addressing the inequalities that are putting immigrants at most risk.
“Although the Coronavirus Response Act intends to put working families and those living paycheck to paycheck first, there is a clear gap in who will benefit from this relief, and it does not include the undocumented,” said Yadira Sanchez, Co-Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “Many others are being left out including the uninsured, those with disabilities, small business owners, and even those fighting this on the frontlines: health care workers.”
Poder Latinx will continue to fight for these communities to ensure that all who are impacted are taken care of in a fair and equitable manner. All people living in the United States, regardless of immigration status, should have access to equal resources in this particularly difficult and uncertain time. “Now more than ever we must come together and think of our communities as a whole,” said Sanchez.
