Poder Latinx Statement on Supreme Court Decision Upholding Mail Ballot Grace Periods
Washington, D.C. — Poder Latinx welcomes today's Supreme Court decision affirming that states may continue counting mail-in ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received within legally established timeframes.
This ruling helps protect access to the ballot box for eligible voters who rely on voting by mail, including working families, seniors, military and overseas voters, rural communities, and individuals who may face barriers to voting in person. It also preserves existing election procedures in multiple states ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, providing clarity for voters and election administrators alike.
“Today's decision affirms a simple but fundamental principle: when eligible voters follow the rules and cast their ballots, their votes deserve to be counted,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “This ruling provides important clarity for voters and election officials alike as we approach the 2026 midterm elections. Voting by mail remains a critical option for millions of Americans, including working families, seniors, military and overseas voters, and people who may face barriers to voting in person. A strong democracy depends on ensuring that every eligible voter has a meaningful opportunity to participate and have their voice heard.”
At a time when confidence in our democratic process is essential, today's decision reinforces that eligible voters who meet their state's requirements and cast their ballots on time should not be disenfranchised by mail delivery timelines outside of their control.
Poder Latinx remains committed to educating communities about their voting options, promoting civic participation, and ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard in our democracy.
