Poder Latinx Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Birthright Citizenship

Washington, D.C.Poder Latinx issued the following statement in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision reaffirming that birthright citizenship protections remain grounded in the Constitution, rejecting efforts that would have allowed states or the federal government to limit or restrict citizenship based on parental status.

The ruling comes amid ongoing national debates over immigration policy and the rights of immigrant families. The Court’s decision maintains long-standing constitutional interpretations of the 14th Amendment and provides clarity at a moment of heightened uncertainty for many communities across the country.

“Poder Latinx welcomes this decision as an affirmation of a core constitutional protection that has shaped generations of American families,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “At a time when immigrant communities continue to face fear and uncertainty, this ruling reinforces the importance of stability, fairness, and dignity under the law.

Birthright citizenship has been a foundational principle of U.S. law for more than a century, ensuring that children born in the United States are recognized as citizens regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Any attempt to weaken that guarantee would have introduced significant legal and social instability for millions of families.”

Poder Latinx remains committed to defending policies that protect immigrant families and strengthen an inclusive democracy where all communities are able to fully participate and thrive.
