Poder Latinx Honors Juneteenth, Reaffirms Commitment to an Inclusive Democracy

National —As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, Poder Latinx joins communities across the country in honoring Juneteenth as a powerful reminder that freedom was not extended to all Americans at the same time. It has been 160 years since the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States, and this day calls on us to reflect on our nation’s history, our ongoing pursuit of equality and justice, and the immeasurable contributions Black Americans have made to our country.

“Juneteenth is a celebration of perseverance, community, and progress. At Poder Latinx, we stand in solidarity with Black communities across the country because our histories are deeply connected through the ongoing pursuit of civil rights, voting rights, fair representation, and equal opportunity,” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “We have made important progress in expanding access to the ballot, protecting birthright citizenship, ensuring representation through an accurate Census, and creating opportunities for communities that have too often been left out of decision-making. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we must also recommit ourselves to protecting those gains and continuing the work of building a more inclusive democracy where every eligible voter can make their voice heard.”

As elections continue across the country and communities prepare for the upcoming election cycle, Juneteenth also serves as a reminder of the power of civic participation. We honor the generations of advocates, organizers, and everyday Americans who fought to expand democratic participation, as well as the community leaders and organizations that continue this work today by helping ensure that every eligible voter has access to the ballot.

This Juneteenth, Poder Latinx reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive, multiracial democracy where every community is represented, every vote counts, and every eligible voter has the opportunity to help shape our collective future.
