Biden Lays Out Bold Plan for Policies Helping Working Families But Action is Required
WASHINGTON - A day after the president’s address at the joint session of Congress, Poder Latinx commends the efforts and accomplishments the Biden administration has achieved so far as it celebrates its first 100 days in office, but promises to continue pressuring for stronger climate, immigration, and economic reform.
The Biden administration has taken some positive steps as it dealt with a global pandemic, and an economic and political crisis. Reaching the goal of 200 million COVID-19 vaccine doses delivered, rolling back many harmful immigration policies, and rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement are good but initial steps that will help to address the needs of our community.
Poder Latinx – which has pushed for the issue of paid leave for the past year – was encouraged to hear Biden introduce the American Families Plan calling for 12 weeks of guaranteed paid leave. He also addressed the urgent need for a pathway to citizenship for holders of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and farmworkers through the passage of the Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act.
“Latinx communities across the United States do not live single-issue lives. The administration's success on COVID-19 vaccine distribution and job creation affect us just as much as immigration,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director of Poder Latinx. “We commend the administration’s efforts so far, but recognize that our community desperately needs guaranteed paid leave for all, bold immigration reform, and stronger climate policy. We will continue pushing our elected officials to deliver. It’s imperative that this bold agenda become a reality so that we can truly enjoy the transformative results of these lofty goals.”
“While the acknowledgement of paid family leave, comprehensive immigration reform, clean energy and raising the minimum wage is welcome, there is no realistic path to get 10 Republicans in the Senate to support this progressive agenda in a way that builds economic security for our communities. The president shared his ‘big vision’ and important ideas at the joint session of Congress yesterday, but to deliver on these goals and see his promises through, we need him to leverage the weight of the executive branch to deliver those 51 votes. This is no time for Democrats to waiver,” said Esteban Garces, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
