Revised Build Back Better Framework Is a Positive Step Forward for Immigrants and the Environment

WASHINGTON - On Wednesday night, the White House released the new framework for the ‘Build Back Better’ agenda, complete with components focused on immigration reform, transformative investments to combat climate change, investments in childcare and more.

Unfortunately, paid leave - one of the key issues Poder Latinx mobilizes around - has been cut from the Build Back Better Act, proving that even in the midst of a global pandemic, some Senators chose to keep Americans from being able to take care of their families and their own health.

“Despite the deeply unfortunate removal of critical paid leave protections, the recently announced budget framework still includes much-needed immigration reform funding in addition to protections for our environment and support for enhanced ‘green’ infrastructure,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director of Poder Latinx. “This is an important step forward, and we are confident that these crucial elements of the ‘Build Back Better’ agenda will be passed this year. We urge the Biden administration to continue fighting for the things that matter to Americans and continue fighting for progressive policies like paid leave. The Latinx community, specifically Latinas, have been disproportionately impacted by the need for Paid Leave every day, but especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Build Back Better Act deserves swift approval by Congress so we can immediately start down the path to a clean energy future in a country built for all, but we still need work on bold and ambitious policies.”

“This exciting progress toward enacting the Build Back Better Act is thanks to the tireless work of advocates across the country who have fought for a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants and pushed for policy changes to save our environment and slow climate change. If the framework does become law, it will be the single largest investment in climate, justice, and clean energy in the history of the United States. And while this may be so, the Biden Administration must make a wider effort to include paid leave in its efforts, especially in the midst of a global pandemic in which hundreds of thousands have lost their lives in the United States. Poder Latinx is committed to continue the push for paid leave for all and ensure that the Latinx community gains the ability to care for ourselves and our loved ones when the need arises,” said Esteban Garces, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
