Paid Leave Must Remain in Build Back Better Act; American Families Depend On It
The paid leave provisions in the current version of the Build Back Better Act are reportedly on the verge of being removed. Poder Latinx has released the following statements on the need for paid leave to be included in the federal agenda as Congress negotiations continue:
“Poder Latinx joins the families, voters, businesses, and patients urgently calling for paid leave to remain a prioritized element of the ‘Build Back Better’ agenda. As we continue recovering from a global pandemic, it is time to ensure American families can stay healthy as they keep our economy running in tough times. Paid leave saves lives and jobs across the country. Millions of U.S. residents are out of work because of caregiving responsibilities, which continued throughout the pandemic. Now is the time to prioritize paid leave, not remove it from federal budget priorities,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director of Poder Latinx
"Labor unions and businesses support paid leave, and this policy alone could help working families in America. Temporary paid leave was the first pandemic recovery program to be offered, and it saved countless jobs and lives. Now is the time for paid leave to be a lasting legacy of the Biden administration. Small businesses can’t build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic without paid leave. Federal paid leave could protect some of our most vulnerable populations; Our country can wait no longer for federal paid leave provisions. The removal of paid leave from the budget would be disastrous for Americans throughout the nation and show willful ignorance of the impacts the lack of paid leave has had on families. The time is now for Congress to protect our working families,” said Esteban Garces, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
