President Trump: Do Not Fault Immigrants For Your Failure to Lead

Poder Latinx released a statement regarding President Trump’s decision, made in a tweet late Monday night, to suspend immigration for the foreseeable future in response to the Coronavirus pandemic and its economic implications. The president, who is expected to sign an executive order today, attributed the decision to protect American jobs “in light of the attack from the invisible enemy.”

This statement is attributed to Esteban Garces, Co-Executive Director of Poder Latinx:

“To place any sort of blame on immigrants now as thousands have worked tirelessly on the frontlines to provide essential services such as food and healthcare is disgraceful and a blatant effort to shift the focus from this administration’s lack of preparation to combat this pandemic. We rebuke this polarizing and xenophobic rhetoric during a time when we should be focused on coming together as one country to save lives and jobs,” said Garces. “We must remember this lack of preparation in November and fight back to prevent racism from driving the public agenda.”
