Poder Latinx Urges Congress to Push HEROES Act Forward
Proposed Legislation Addresses Disparities in Coronavirus Aid Access
Poder Latinx released a statement regarding the most-recently proposed Coronavirus aid legislation, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act. Announced yesterday by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, this $3 trillion act would cover needs that have become more prevalent since the start of the pandemic - including dedicating funding to essential workers, extending unemployment benefits, strengthening food security, and bolstering housing assistance, among others.
This statement is attributed to Yadira Sanchez, Co-Executive Director:
“We are pleased by the provisions of this bill and believe it is a step in the right direction towards honoring and thanking our heroes – regardless of their immigration status. The Latinx community has faced this pandemic head-on by providing essential services and keeping our economy running. At the same time, we have suffered the ultimate price with disproportionately higher death rates in Latinx communities throughout the nation. The proposed bill amends failures in the initial round of bills and allow help for our communities during this time of great need. We are now calling on Congress to act so that everyone has the resources they need, and to join us in our effort to lift everyone out of this crisis. Working together, we will all succeed.”
