Poder Latinx Celebrates Supreme Court’s DACA Decision
But Maintains Congress Needs to Act Now to Give Permanent Protections to Immigrant Youth
WASHINGTON - In a major victory following years of struggle by immigrant youth, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the way the Trump administration went about ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was unlawful and it allowed the program to remain in place for now. Poder Latinx released this statement today:
Adonias Arevalo, Arizona State Director of Poder Latinx and DACA recipient:
“Today, the Supreme Court exercised its power in halting this administration’s racist and xenophobic agenda. We are encouraged by this major development and know that it is a great step in the right direction for our communities.”
Yadira Sanchez, Co-Executive Director of Poder Latinx:
“Since 2017, we have been fighting to protect DACA despite attack after attack on immigrants from the president. This victory is proof of our collective power. While we celebrate, we know that this decision only provides temporary relief. We are prepared to continue the fight until every person, regardless of their status, can live without fear. Now that the Supreme Court has made its decision, it is time that the American people choose to protect these individuals on a permanent basis by demanding Congress act now to pass legislation. Also, we must make our voices heard through our vote in November and continue to fight for our communities because we are on the right side of history.”
