Poder Latinx Urges Senate to Reject Reckless Tax Bill That Harms Families, Guts Clean Energy, and Fuels Division

Washington, D.C. — After the U.S. House of Representatives hastily passed the reconciliation bill last night, —due to a bloc Republican support—and with the bill now to advance to the U.S. Senate, Poder Latinx is urging Senate leaders to reject this deeply misguided proposal that would make low-income families poorer while enriching the privileged, stripping life-saving benefits from working families and funneling billions into border militarization and fossil fuel expansion.

The bill slashes Medicaid, forcing over 7 million Americans—many Latino families—off coverage, and cuts SNAP benefits that support 40 million people, threatening the health and food security of low-income communities already facing economic hardship.

Simultaneously, it dismantles key clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act, risking 830,000 jobs and $520 billion in projects. It eliminates programs that help families lower energy bills and access efficient appliances, driving household energy costs up by over $230 annually by 2035.

While cutting vital support for working families, the bill ramps up defense and immigration enforcement spending by over $140 billion—including $50 billion for a border wall—prioritizing punishment over people and ignoring long-term community stability.

“This bill is not about fiscal responsibility—it’s about advancing a cruel political agenda at the expense of our communities,” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “It strips healthcare, food, and clean energy support from those who need it most, while rewarding the ultra-wealthy with more tax breaks and pouring billions into walls, detention centers, and polluting industries. It’s a betrayal of working families. The Senate must put people over politics—use common sense, show compassion, and reject this bill.”

Poder Latinx urges Senate leaders to prioritize the well-being of everyday Americans by protecting Medicaid, preserving climate-smart investments, and stopping this reckless legislation from becoming law. These issues are critical to Poder Latinx because they directly impact the health, economic security, and environmental future of Latinx families and communities, who deserve fair access to opportunities and resources that foster thriving lives.
