Florida Proclamation Honors Poder Latinx for Environmental Justice Work to Protect Endangered Species

ORLANDO, FL — Poder Latinx is honored to receive, for the second consecutive year, a proclamation presented by State Representative Rita Harris (D-44, FL) designating May 16, 2025 as Endangered Species Day in the State of Florida, in recognition of our ongoing efforts to protect Florida’s environment and endangered species. The proclamation underscores the importance of education, habitat protection, and community engagement in safeguarding Florida’s diverse wildlife for future generations.

“As an organization deeply committed to environmental justice, we’re proud to stand alongside leaders like Representative Harris who understand that protecting endangered species is also about protecting our communities—especially those most impacted by environmental harm. I’m especially proud of the work our Florida team, Carolina Wassmer and Alejandro Florez, are doing to bring these critical issues to the forefront of community conversations, particularly within Latino communities,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.

Protecting endangered species is critical in the fight for environmental justice. Low-income and Latinx communities are often on the frontlines of pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change—issues that also endanger the plants and animals that share our ecosystems. By fostering environmental education and awareness in our communities, we empower individuals to take action for conservation and sustainability, building a healthier, more just future for both people and the planet.

“This proclamation reinforces what we at Poder Latinx know to be true: that environmental stewardship must include and reflect the voices of our communities,” said Carolina Wassmer, Florida State Director for Poder Latinx. “Through education and advocacy, we are ensuring that Latinx families across Florida are engaged in protecting our environment—not just for wildlife, but for the health and wellbeing of our children and future generations.”

Poder Latinx continues to champion Latino leadership in environmental advocacy and supports policies that build a just, healthy, and sustainable future for all Floridians.
