WASHINGTON - Poder Latinx, in partnership with FLIC, HOPE, JWJ, FWAF, and Dream Defenders, is hosting a press conference to push Florida's U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to protect undocumented immigrants who are facing economic and health crises and mobilize federal immigration relief for all of Florida's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries. This event is in collaboration with FIRM Action's March to Victory Relay Across America, a nationwide event to demand Congress pass bills that create a pathway to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the United States. Advocates will pass a torch during the press conference symbolizing support for immigrants nationwide.
"Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, undocumented people have been on the front lines ensuring Americans have access to basic necessities and comforts. This event seeks to promote support and acknowledgment to all essential workers and their families, demanding a roadmap to citizenship and making it clear that immigrants and communities of color must not be treated as expendable or deportable," said Giuliana Di Lauro, Florida state director of Poder Latinx.
The conference will feature Ahtziry Barrera, Florida Fellow of Poder Latinx; a representative from HOPE Community Center; and a representative from Dream Defenders.
"We need our representatives to stop supporting policies that hurt our communities. Legislation is constantly changing, and we need every member of Congress to provide federal immigration relief NOW and end all deportations," said Stephanie Wall, director of membership for Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC).
