Poder Latinx Statement on White Nationalist Terrorism at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON -– As our nation watches in horror the violence and terrorismas being committed by white nationalists in the U.S. Capitol at the instigation of President Trump, Poder Latinx stands firmly in defense of our democracy, pledging, “We will not let our democracy be stolen from us; not today, not ever.”

“The violent protests organized by Trump and supported by Republicans are the result of relentless efforts by conservatives to deny communities of color, particularly Latinx and Black Americans, the right to vote and elect officeholders from president to mayor. These terrorists are trying to undermine our democracy because President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris won the election,” said Esteban Garces, Co-Executive Director of Poder Latinx.

Yadira Sanchez, co-director of Poder Latinx noted the enthusiasm that Latinx communities showed in the 2020 elections, including in Georgia’s run-off elections held Tuesday.

“We celebrate our democracy, as demonstrated yesterday in Georgia where voters elected their first Black senator from Georgia. That is how democracy is practiced in America, peacefully, and without assaulting our institutions of government and those who cherish our right to vote,” Sanchez said.

“In the 2020 election cycle, voters repudiated Trump’s politics of division and hatred, and most voters believe Biden’s election is valid, according to polls,” Sanchez said. “But the Republicans empowered the white nationalists who have engaged in vigilante violence while blaming anyone who opposes their agenda of hate, including Latinx and Black Lives Matter movements. It is time for us to come together under the leadership of new leaders who reflect the very best of every American,” Sanchez said.

“Meanwhile, as investigations begin into the political unrest that culminated in the assault on the Capitol, Poder Latinx calls on officials to hold Trump accountable and for Republicans to admit their own wrongdoings and apologize to our nation,” Garces said.
