Poder Latinx Statement on Secretary Castro Suspending Presidential Campaign

Washington, DC – Poder Latinx would like to extend un abrazo and a warm thank you to Secretary Julian Castro.  We appreciate the efforts and contributions he made through his bid for the presidency of the United States.  He pushed through the void of our broken immigration system to further the dialogue on decriminalizing undocumented immigrants fleeing violence and poverty.  He also has consistently been a champion for marginalized communities, hard-working families, and bold progressive ideas.  Further, we could not be more proud of the intelligent, thoughtful, statesman-like way he has carried himself as one of the top representatives for the Latinx community.

As the former Mayor of San Antonio, Head of Housing and Urban Development, and a short-list candidate for Hillary Clinton’s Presidential ticket in 2016, we have no doubt Secretary Castro will continue to be at the forefront of Democratic leadership in this country.

The 2020 elections will be the first time that Latinx is the largest racial and ethnic group in the electorate.  A record 32 million Latinx are projected to be eligible to vote this year, according to Pew Research. Latinx voters ages 18-24 have tripled on average in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, New Mexico, North Carolina, and the all-important battleground states of Ohio and Pennsylvania.  They have doubled in growth in those same states for ages 25-34 year-olds.

We look forward to working with Secretary Castro to engage and inspire our communities to not only vote in the primary and presidential elections but to be a part of the presidential campaigns so that our voices are heard at every level.  Poder Latinx will continue to engage those we register to vote in the political process well beyond Election Day.
