Poder Latinx Statement on Legislative Walkout Over Redistricting in Texas

WASHINGTON, D.C. In response to recent developments in Texas, where state lawmakers have taken the extraordinary step of leaving the state in protest of a proposed redistricting plan, Poder Latinx issued the following statement, attributed to Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of the organization:

“This moment underscores the urgent need to ensure that redistricting processes remain transparent, inclusive, and accountable to the communities they affect. The proposed changes to Texas’s congressional map raise serious concerns about fair representation, particularly for Latino and other historically underrepresented communities.

With limited procedural tools available, some lawmakers withheld quorum, pausing floor votes—including on the redistricting proposal. The move reflects the intensity of debate surrounding the process and broader questions about representation and electoral fairness.

Fair maps are the foundation of a healthy democracy. As one of the fastest-growing populations in Texas, Latino voters deserve district boundaries that reflect the size and strength of our communities—not diminish them. We call on all officials and institutions involved to ensure that the final redistricting outcome respects the rights of all Texans to be fairly and fully represented.”

Poder Latinx will continue organizing, educating, and mobilizing Latino communities across Texas and beyond to fight for fair maps and a multiracial democracy where every vote counts.
