Poder Latinx Condemns Supreme Court Decision Allowing Mass Layoffs at Department of Education

NATIONAL — With yesterday’s news that the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration to proceed with mass layoffs at the Department of Education, Poder Latinx expresses its deep outrage. This decision represents a dangerous overreach that threatens our public education system, undermines democratic governance, and puts the future of millions of children—particularly in Latino and vulnerable communities—at risk.

Public education has long been a pillar of opportunity for Latino families and communities of color. Dismantling the very agency charged with ensuring equity in our schools is a direct assault on our collective right to learn, to thrive, and to fully participate in American society. The decision sets a dangerous precedent that places politics over people and erodes critical protections for students.

Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx, issued the following statement:

“This decision is not just about jobs, but about justice. The Trump administration has openly been working to dismantle the Department of Education, bypassing the will of Congress and putting millions of students of Latino, Black, Indigenous, and working-class communities in harm’s way.

Latino families know all too well what happens when public institutions are defunded and disabled. We’ve lived through disinvestment, overcrowded classrooms, and discriminatory policies that block our children’s paths to opportunity.

This is a flagrant abuse of power and a calculated attack on our future. Poder Latinx stands firmly with our partners, educators, students, and families in demanding accountability and fighting for a strong, equitable public education system. We will not be silent at this, and continue to organize, mobilize, and continue to defend every child’s right to learn and succeed.”
