Poder Latinx Condemns Executive Order Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote

Washington, D.C. – After the White House announcement that President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that mandates proof of citizenship for individuals to vote in federal elections, Poder Latinx strongly condemns this blatant action, which will create unnecessary barriers to voting and will disproportionately affect communities of color, especially Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and immigrant populations who already face challenges accessing government-issued identifications and official documentation.

The following statement can be attributed to Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:

“This Executive Order is a direct attack on the fundamental right to vote and will disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, paving the way for racial profiling and systemic exclusion, which will disproportionately impact marginalized groups who are most vulnerable to increased scrutiny and barriers to obtaining vital documentation.

This is not about ensuring the integrity of our elections—it is about suppressing votes, particularly in low-income and immigrant communities, and undermining the very democracy this country was built upon. It echoes the discriminatory tactics of Jim Crow laws, voter ID restrictions, and gerrymandering, all designed to limit the power of the communities of color.

Poder Latinx rejects this Executive Order in the strongest terms, as this administration seeks to silence the voices of Latinx, Black, and immigrant communities. We urge lawmakers to fight this effort and protect the voting rights of every eligible American. The right to vote is not a privilege; it is a constitutional right that must be defended for all.”

Poder Latinx’s mission is to build a political wave where Latinx communities, immigrants, and people of color are decision-makers in this country’s democracy.
