Poder Latinx Calls for Accountability After Fatal ICE-Related Shooting in Minneapolis

Washington, DC — Poder Latinx condemns the reported fatal shooting today in Minneapolis, involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This incident resulted in the death of a woman, exposing the real dangers of enforcement practices that bring federal agents into our neighborhoods and put immigrant families and entire communities in harm’s way.

Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx, issued the following statement:

“Today’s incident in Minneapolis is not an isolated event. It follows an unprecedented escalation of ICE activity in the Twin Cities and across the country, even displaying violence against elected officials like Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva, a clear indicator of a pattern of violence.  Federal agents being deployed into residential neighborhoods under the guise of public safety. Witness accounts surrounding this incident raise serious concerns that demand full transparency and independent review.

Human loss from these types of patrolling should stop us all in our tracks. ICE does not belong in our neighborhoods, and the use of force against our communities is never justified. When federal agencies operate with impunity, without transparency or accountability, the result is fear, trauma, and in this case, the loss of human life. Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the woman killed in Minneapolis.”

This tragedy is the direct outcome of policies that criminalize immigrant communities and treat our neighborhoods as battlegrounds. We demand an immediate, independent investigation into this shooting, full transparency from the Department of Homeland Security, and accountability for every official responsible for creating these dangerous conditions.”

Poder Latinx  joins local leaders and advocates in calling for ICE to withdraw from Minneapolis and around the country, and for Congress to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to oversee and hold ICE and DHS accountable. No family should fear violence in their own neighborhood, and no community should be subjected to intimidation simply for existing.

We will continue to stand with immigrant communities and demand policies rooted in dignity, safety, and justice.
