Poder Latinx Applauds the Biden-Harris Administration for Expanding Health Care Coverage to DACA Recipients
National - In response to the decision of the Biden-Harris administration to grant more than 100,000 DACA recipients access to affordable, quality healthcare coverage through the Affordable Care Act, the Poder Latinx team celebrates this important victory in social justice.
According to the White House announcement, DACA recipients can apply for coverage through HealthCare.gov and state-based marketplaces starting in November, and financial assistance may be available to help them acquire quality health insurance. This decision recognizes the humanity of DACA recipients, who before were prohibited from receiving government health coverage.
“What we are witnessing today is a win for all. Health care should not be a privilege reserved for a select few; it is a fundamental human right for all. Far too often, immigrants are denied care and basic human necessities while navigating the complex and turbulent immigration system. Immigrants are integral members of our communities, and DACA recipients, in particular, are vital contributors deserving of the same care as everyone. When our friends, family, and neighbors are healthy, our entire community thrives. Come November, over 100,000 hardworking, caring, vital members of our community will feel a burden lifted off their shoulders. They will no longer live in fear of injury or illness or worry about losing their job in fear of losing their health insurance,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.
