Arizona Judge Rules Pre-Statehood Ban on Abortion Into Effect
PHOENIX- On Friday, Pima County Judge Kellie Johnson ruled that Arizona’s 19th century ban on most abortions will go into effect after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This decision, which stems from an 1864 law that allows no exceptions for rape or incest, was delivered a day before a law restricting abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy was to take effect.
Poder Latinx has released the following statement on the Arizona Court Decision:
“This decision is stripping away the rights of Arizonans to make choices for their own bodies, and taking us backwards 140 years. With this decision will come a transformation of Arizona into a state where survivors of sexual assault and incest cannot seek abortions, where healthcare providers can be imprisoned for helping patients, and where expectant mothers with medical complications will not be able to protect their own lives. As we move toward the midterm elections, we must remember decisions like these and the people that will be harmed. As voters, we too have a decision to make- to continue to allow our rights to be taken from our hands, or to make our voices heard. We need Congress to act now and codify legislative protections for reproductive justice. Enough is enough and Arizonans deserve the right to choose,” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.
