Poder Latinx Warns Against Dangerous Push to End Mail-in Voting, Defends Access for All Voters

NATIONAL — Poder Latinx strongly condemns recent statements made by President Trump calling for the elimination of mail-in ballots and voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. This alarming proposal is a direct attack on our democracy and threatens voting access for communities already facing systemic barriers, including working families, voters of color, and college students who rely on mail-in voting for its convenience and flexibility.

Poder Latinx is committed to building an inclusive democracy and protecting the rights of the Latinx community and all eligible voters. A strong and fair democracy relies on voters being able to make their voices heard in a safe, secure, and accessible way.

The following statement can be attributed to Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:

“The mere intention of eliminating mail-in voting is a blatant act of voter suppression. We should be making voting easier and more accessible for those who are eligible—not harder. Many in our communities rely on mail-in ballots because they cannot afford to miss work, lack reliable transportation to distant polling places, or face health challenges that prevent them from voting in person.

Mail-in voting is also critical for young people—nearly half of voters ages 18–29 cast their ballots by mail in 2020, doubling their usage from 2016. And research shows that mail-in voting boosts turnout across the board—especially among young people and communities of color—without giving an advantage to any political party. For decades, it has been a proven and trusted method embraced by voters across all ages, races, and political affiliations.

Stripping away this vital component of our democracy is an abuse of power that would especially harm Latinx, Black, and Brown communities. Poder Latinx will continue to fight back against false claims designed to weaken our democracy and sow distrust in our electoral process.

At the same time, we call on and empower our communities to keep showing up and voting—because every vote matters, and every voice should be heard.”

Poder Latinx will continue mobilizing on the ground and nationally to ensure a fair and inclusive democracy—one where every eligible voter has the freedom and opportunity to participate.
