Poder Latinx Urges Biden Administration to Push for Further Reform on Policing and Gun Violence, Applauds Decision to Take Executive Action

WASHINGTON – Two years after the killing of George Floyd, President Biden has signed a historic executive order that will deliver the most significant police reform in decades. The order is a step in the right direction toward ensuring accountability and transparency in federal law enforcement and establishing other criminal justice reforms. Poder Latinx commends President Biden for advancing this reform and calls for meaningful legislation on police reform and gun violence.

The executive order introduces a set of new rules for federal law enforcement agencies. These include: creating a national database for police misconduct, improving investigation practices, mandating body-worn camera policies, banning the use of chokeholds, initiating new standards for limiting the use of force and emphasizing de-escalations, requiring annual anti-bias training, and introducing a strategic plan to reform the criminal justice system.

Yadira Sanchez, executive director of Poder Latinx, delivered the following statement:

“George Floyd’s murder two years ago, a murder that caused one of the most significant social movements in this country to acknowledge the challenges in our criminal justice system and demand reforms, illustrated how Black and Brown communities often fall victims to law enforcement practices. This executive order will not only benefit Black and Brown communities, but America as a whole nation. Communities must be able to have some semblance of trust in our law enforcement in order for law enforcement to complete their job of protecting our communities.

President Biden made it clear that police reform was a priority during his State of the Union Address. Despite past rejections from lawmakers of even the slightest reforms in law enforcement, President Biden took the necessary first step to fulfill his commitment. The president must press for meaningful police reform legislation from Congress, including the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, and policies that address gun violence in our country.”
