Poder Latinx Statement on Senate Parliamentarian’s Decision to Block Pathway to Citizenship

NATIONWIDE – Yesterday, a decision was made by the Senate parliamentarian against the inclusion of a pathway to citizenship through the budget reconciliation process. In spite of this setback, immigrant rights activists, organizations, and issue champions in the Senate are prepared to continue working together to ensure that a pathway is achieved this year.

Poder Latinx has released the following statements following the decision:

“We’re still at the beginning of the fight for a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers, TPS holders, farmworkers, and essential workers. The parliamentarian has ruled on one possible route, and now it’s time for our senators to stand up with us and create a new strategy. We will continue working with our partners to ensure that elected officials are being held accountable and that the Latinx community has their voices heard,” said Yadira Sanchez, co-executive director at Poder Latinx.

“This announcement is incredibly disappointing to the millions of immigrants patiently waiting for their chance for citizenship. Additionally, this proposal could have yielded $1.5 trillion over 10 years in economic growth. This is the year we will win citizenship for millions- it’s time for Congress to formally recognize undocumented immigrants as critical members of the American populace who have sacrificed so much for the United States. We will continue pushing Congress to move forward with alternative citizenship proposals to provide relief for millions of undocumented immigrants,” said Esteban Garces, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
