Poder Latinx Reaction to the Nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to Replace the Late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court

WASHINGTON -  Today, President Trump officially announced Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee for Supreme Court Justice to fill the seat formerly occupied by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Judge Barrett’s nomination is seen as a win for anti-abortion activists and opponents of the Affordable Care Act. If confirmed, the administration will succeed in securing a conservative majority on the Supreme Court in its quest to further erode the rights of minorities and implement its cruel policies that until now have been blocked by courts.

“While most of us can agree that we hope to see a woman fill the seat that the legendary Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg left open with her passing, the nomination of Judge Barrett is simply a political move to further load the Supreme Court with conservative jurists that will help the administration dismantle decades of legal work that protect the rights of women, the Black community and people of color, immigrants, and other marginalized groups. It is clear that the Trump administration and the Senate GOP is frantically working to confirm a new justice that will be amenable to their agenda before they likely lose the votes they need in the Senate on Election Day, with Republican Senators Martha McSally (AZ) and Cory Gardner (CO) currently facing tough re-election campaigns. As the GOP subjects the highest court in our nation to partisan power plays, we as voters must honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and contributions by ensuring our voices are heard at the polls this November. It is our responsibility to continue the fight for justice that the late Justice dedicated her life to by electing leaders who truly represent our communities, and motivate others to do the same,” said Esteban Garcés, co-executive director of Poder Latinx.
