Poder Latinx Marks National Vote Early Day Tomorrow With Live & Digital Events To Mobilize Voters in Early Voting States
PHOENIX -- Poder Latinx, along with national and local partners, will hold a “Day of Action”, tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 24, in partnership with Vote Early Day, a movement of nonprofits, businesses, election administrators and artists working to ensure voters know their options to vote early in their states and get to the polls. Poder Latinx is a founding member of Vote Early Day.
Partners for the day-long voter mobilization celebration include: Univision, Kobalt, Arizona Drag Voter Squad, along with One Arizona, Phoenix Pride, The Arizona Dream Act Coalition, NARAL Pro Choice America, ArizonaDrag.com, United We Dream Network, Family Values at Work, and Vote With Us, which will live stream a segment of the Phoenix event as part of its multi-city Vote Early Day virtual rally.
The ‘mobile mural’ to be unveiled and displayed is by world-renown artists Ernesto Yerena and Shepard Fairey. Yerena has created a number of works associated with Arizona issues around immigration, and Fairey created the Obama ‘HOPE’ Poster. Big Bowl of Ideas, a creative public affairs agency, is producing the mural display and will also have posters and postcards with voting information on it to give away.
Events anchored in Phoenix include a live streamed discussion with Poder Latinx’s Susana Durán and Adonías Arévalo, Georgia and Arizona state directors, respectively, as well as Poder Latinx Florida staff, where hundreds of canvassers will be on the ground contacting voters.
Later, Drag Voter Squad will host a socially-distanced event featuring drag performances and music by Las Cafeteras, whose music video, “Long Time Coming,” was recently released in collaboration with The Center for Cultural Power and Poder Latinx to encourage voter mobilization. Face masks will be mandatory and reservations are required for the free event.
“We are excited to be part of this moment to mobilize people to vote this year. There is so much at stake for our communities. Just like our song, change is a long time coming. We look forward to being part of that,” says Héctor Flores, bandleader of Las Cafeteras.
During this electoral season, Poder Latinx has been uplifting the role of music and art as a bridge to engage to eligible voters via its Votar es Poder campaign, including through collaboration with Las Cafeteras, and the launching of a Virtual Art Gallery with works of over 15 Latinx artists. These efforts also include a partnership with Somos Arte, the creators of the Afro-Latina superhero La Borinqueña, to develop an election webcomic aimed at engaging eligible young Latinx voters in the electoral process. The La Borinqueña webcomic will be featured on digital billboards across the city of Phoenix on Vote Early Day.
“We are offering a strong mix of message and the arts because voting is becoming a part of the Latino culture. We are celebrating our voting power and the potential of our growth as we knock on voters’ doors and dance to the polls,” said Adonías Arévalo, Arizona State Director for Poder Latinx.
