Poder Latinx Expresses Concern Over Supreme Court Ruling Banning Affirmative Action

NATIONWIDE - Yesterday, the Supreme Court Justice of the United States repealed the use of Affirmative action in the college admissions process. Poder Latinx expresses deep concern over this recent Supreme Court ruling that poses a significant setback for achieving a fair and inclusive society for the Latinx community. By banning affirmative action, the perpetuation of  disparities will  hinder social mobility for Latinx students, professionals, and communities. This ruling serves as a reminder of the power of the vote to influence future supreme court appointments and their impact on American lives.

Affirmative action has been crucial in addressing historical inequalities and leveling the playing field for underrepresented communities. Poder Latinx firmly believes that diversity enriches our society and strengthens our communities. By embracing and celebrating our differences, we can understand the necessity of affirmative action to provide fair opportunities.

The following statement is attributed to Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:

“The Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action undermines efforts toward economic justice and threatens the progress toward achieving a more equitable society. Affirmative action promotes equal opportunities for those who face educational, economic, and institutional barriers to success, many of which are in the Latinx community. Unfortunately, when this ruling becomes a reality, we will be left without the vital protections and opportunities that affirmative action provides. As advocates for economic justice, we adamantly disagree with this ruling and will work to engage with voters to emphasize the gravitational consequences of reversing affirmative action. The economic transformation in one’s life that can be made by accessing college is unrivaled. We urgently call upon voters to use this unfortunate ruling to understand the impact our votes have on the future of the Supreme Court. Our elected officials are the ones who appoint Supreme Court justices for lifetime appointments, our votes matter and participating in elections can have massive impacts on our society- like who gets to make decisions on rulings such as this. Together, we will continue our unwavering fight for equality, justice, and a brighter future for all Latinos."
