Poder Latinx Condemns House Republicans' Passage of Reconciliation Bill That Rubber-Stamps Trump’s Extreme Agenda
NATIONAL — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Senate’s version of the reconciliation bill, passing with the 218 votes necessary, all from Republican Representatives, fully aligning with the Trump administration’s most extreme demands and delivering a direct blow to working families, immigrant communities, and our environment.
It is a betrayal of America’s working families by the Republican Party. Despite Trump’s repeated denials of any connection to Project 2025 or plans to cut Medicare, this moment reveals the truth: it was all a lie. His actions show a blatant disregard for the well-being of U.S. families. It is not a political win; the “big and beautiful” bill was viewed unfavorably from the start, with 64% of U.S. adults, including the vast majority of independents and Democrats. And among Republicans, support was also shaky, with two-thirds of non-MAGA Republicans opposing the bill.
“This vote is a clear betrayal of the American people,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “At a time when families need support, stability, and opportunity, Congress chose political theater and corporate giveaways. The communities most harmed by this bill are the same ones bearing the weight of inflation, climate disasters, and systemic inequality.
Families across the U.S. will face higher utility costs as clean energy credits are slashed. Our communities in states like Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas will have some of the largest cuts to access to Medicaid. And many families will lose the support of SNAP and childcare that allows them to keep their families afloat during these hard economic times.
This day is a clear representation of why elections matter. Why your vote matters. In this decision, the well-being of our nation fell into the hands of the 218 Representatives who voted in favor of this bill. Poder Latinx urges all community members to speak up. Hold Congress accountable and demand better. No more broken promises. We will hold the Republican party for choosing money over people.”
As Congress goes into recess in August, call your Representatives and Senators, meet with them, and let them know these decisions do not reflect our values or our needs. Now is the time to take action; we cannot afford to sit around and watch our livelihoods be bargained for the benefit of billionaires. From now until midterms, and all elections after, we must show up in record numbers to lay a strong foundation for a government that listens to and works for the people.
Our voices matter, and when we don’t show up, when we don’t vote, we face major consequences that will have long-term effects. The future of our families, our communities, and our democracy depends on what you do now. It’s time to organize, mobilize, and vote.
