Poder Latinx Champions Voter Participation and the Power of the Latino Vote in the California Primaries and the Upcoming Midterms
June 2, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
California — Voting for the California primaries was today, and as we wait for polls to close, Poder Latinx is proud of the participation of California voters who made their voices heard at the polls.
While primaries and local elections may not always receive the same attention as larger national races, their impact is significant. Through this primary election, Californians helped decide which candidates will move forward to the November ballot for Governor, key U.S. House races, and a wide range of statewide and local offices.
As we await the results of the primary election, one thing is clear: Latinos in California are the key force shaping elections. California is home to about a quarter of all eligible Hispanic voters in the country. Nationwide, about 1.4 million Hispanics become eligible to vote each year, making our community one of the most important and growing voices in our democracy.
“Every election is an opportunity for our communities to be heard and be represented in our democracy. Poder Latinx is committed to defending our democracy by removing barriers that would normally stop an eligible voter from making their voice count at the polls,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx. “Every race matters, every vote matters, and Latino voters in particular are deciding factors in how our community is treated and represented.”
Our work does not end here. Having participated in mobilizing voters for primaries and local elections across seven states, Poder Latinx is now shifting our focus to ensuring our communities are registered, informed, and ready to vote in the 2026 midterms. Through voter workshops, ballot walkthroughs, canvassing, tabling, and meeting our communities where they are, we will continue working to empower Latino voters and strengthen civic participation year-round.
