Supreme Court Defies Congress in Ruling Against State of New York

Poder Latinx Condemns Decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen

NATIONWIDE - In a 6-3 vote, the United States Supreme Court has released its decision on New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the first major Second Amendment ruling in over a decade. This decision has struck down a New York State gun-control law requiring citizens to show “proper cause” to obtain a concealed carry permit to carry a gun outside the home.

Poder Latinx has released the following statement on NYRPA v. Bruen:

“This ruling makes all of us less safe- students at schools, people at Churches, supermarkets, movie theaters, sport centers, and public transit. This decision comes at a time when we are still in mourning for the lives lost in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and 2 teachers lost their lives. When will we start to look at these lives lost and put the safety of our communities first? We continue to receive thoughts and prayers, yet no action is done to put a stop to these preventable deaths. Latinx communities are among one of the most severely susceptible to gun violence, experiencing increased rates of violent hate crime victimization amplified by anti-immigration policies and hateful rhetoric heightened by the previous presidential administration. We are calling on Congress to rectify this decision by passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a life-saving bill that will enhance gun safety, and reduce community gun violence, mass shootings, and domestic violence.” said Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.
