Poder Latinx Continues Advocacy for Environmental Justice During Earth Month
COBB COUNTY, GA - April is recognized as Earth Month. The Latinx community is on the frontlines of the climate crisis, more acutely feeling the effects of climate change and pollution than any other demographic in the United States largely due to where they live and work. Latinxs disproportionately live in areas facing extreme weather conditions and temperatures, poor air and water quality, and overall inequitable access to healthy, sustainable environments. Poder Latinx has pushed for state and federal legislative efforts that take meaningful action to curb the effects of the climate emergency, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the Justice40 Initiative.
The following statement is attributed to Yadira Sanchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx:
“At Poder Latinx, we talk to the Latinx community day in and day out. We are consistently seeing that climate change continues to be a top-of-mind issue because Latinxs are impacted by it the most. Our children are facing the highest rates of asthma, our farmworkers, construction workers, and other outdoor laborers are being exposed to extremely high temperatures, and so much of our community is at-risk because we are facing the implications of climate change being up for negotiation and not enough action taken. We need to hold our lawmakers accountable for the promises they made to address environmental concerns and bring awareness to corporations putting profits over people. Healthy environments have become a luxury to BIPOC communities across the country, a luxury many can’t afford and one that future generations may not have at all. We need to act now and finish the job on climate.”
